TPC Louisiana in Avondale, La., hosts 80 two-man teams for this week's PGA Tour event, and Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry return as defending tournament champions and consensus betting favorites (+360) by the Zurich Classic odds.

McIlroy and Lowry joined forces for the first time in this event last year and defeated the two-man team of Chad Ramey and Martin Trainer in a playoff at 25-under par. The 2025 Zurich Classic of New Orleans begins with Round 1 on Thursday and will end on Sunday. The 160-man field consists of 80 two-man teams.

The team format rotates between better ball (Round 1 and 3) and alternate shot (Round 2 and 4). There'll be a cut after 36 holes.

Novak has been playing some particularly impressive golf throughout the start of the 2025 PGA Tour season, and he's up to No. 34 in the Official World Golf Ranking (OWGR) following his playoff loss in last week's Signature Event. That's his third finish of third or better this season to accompany two other T-13 finishes.

Griffin, 56th in the OWGR, has also played good golf this year and should be motivated through the second half of the season after just missing out on one of the final invitations to the Masters.

Novak tied for 23rd in New Orleans last year with playing partner Davis Thompson. Griffin and Taylor Montgomery missed the cut.

The defending tournament champions are back once again in McIlroy's first competitive tournament since winning the green jacket. Lowry played to a T-18 finish in last week's RBC Heritage Signature Event. They begin this week ranked second and 13th, respectively, in the OWGR.

Though they're the best team in this event by nearly any measure - and both are playing high-quality golf at the moment - their collective popularity and status as the defending champions keep their betting odds far too low to warrant a wager in the outright betting market.

With a $10 bet on McIlroy and Lowry to win the Zurich Classic returning a profit of only $36 if they win, it draws a hard pass from me. The nature of this event and the scoring formats lead to volatility.

We saw last year that it took a playoff for McIlroy and Lowry to beat a much less popular and accomplished team of Ramey and Trainer. Their pre-tournament odds were +12500.
