✅ LSU vs. Auburn predictions, expert picks & best bets

LSU fell to Auburn yesterday after the home team popped off against Friday starter Kade Anderson early. The starter surrendered five earned runs, bringing him to just 20 on the season. However, his ERA has been ballooning from 2.85 to 3.48. LSU couldn’t get rolling against Auburn’s Samuel Dutton, but it managed to plate four runs against the opposing bullpen.

Now it’s a duel between LSU’s Anthony Eyanson (3.38 ERA) and Auburn’s Cade Fisher (4.43 ERA), a pitching matchup that favors the Tigers on paper. But LSU holds an advantage at the plate, too. LSU ranks 13th nationwide in OPS (.983) while Auburn (.909) sits a shakier 48th.

But this series is taking place at Auburn’s Plainsman Park, and the home side maintains a dominant 16-5 record at home. LSU is only 5-3 on the road, which isn’t terrible, but two away losses to Texas and now one to Auburn raise some questions about how strong this LSU team is outside of Baton Rouge.

🏆 Pick to win LSU vs. Auburn: LSU -1.5 ⭐⭐⭐⭐

As impressive as Auburn’s win was yesterday, LSU will take its frustrations out today and tomorrow. Auburn’s Friday starter Dutton is an absolute menace on the mound, but the rest of the team's rotation doesn't match his ability. Fisher, today’s starter, holds a 0-0 record despite making seven starts. Part of that stems from his quasi-opener role. Fisher has logged just 20 1/3 innings over those seven outings.

After Fisher, who does Auburn put into the game? It’s unclear, but it won’t be anyone of Dutton’s caliber, so don’t expect LSU’s batters to be stymied as much as they were on Friday night. LSU's Jared Jones (1.164) and Daniel Dickerson (1.139) are both top-15 players in OPS around the SEC.

It will be very difficult for Auburn’s bats to keep up with LSU. Aside from the worst team OPS, Auburn trots out just one top-20 player in the metric in the conference (Ike Irish at 1.101). LSU slots in another two players before the next-best Auburn batter, Cooper McMurray (1.057).

Back LSU to cover the run line after fumbling the opening game of the series.

⚾ LSU vs. Auburn preview & analysis

🆚 LSU vs. Auburn pitching matchup

  • LSU: Anthony Eyanson (5-0, 3.38 ERA)
  • Auburn: Cade Fisher (0-0, 4.43 ERA)

Anthony Eyanson now leads LSU’s starting rotation in ERA (3.38) and opposing batting average (.219) after last night. He usually lasts 5 1/3 innings during his starts, which isn’t a problem given the quality of LSU's bullpen. Casan Evans (0.77 ERA) and Zac Cowan (0.92 ERA) have totaled 52 2/3 innings of relief work and were not used in last night’s contest. They should help LSU cover the run line with ease.

On the other side, Cade Fisher is a shaky quasi-opener with a 4.43 ERA over seven starts and 20 1/3 innings pitched. He lasts just under three innings per outing. Unlike LSU, Auburn doesn’t boast a bunch of impressive bullpen arms. The team’s two leaders in saves, Carson Myers (3.25 ERA) and Ryan Hetzler (3.95 ERA), leave much to be desired relative to their LSU counterparts.
