The Houston Astros (10-10) aim to complete a three-game home sweep of the San Diego Padres (15-6) on Sunday Night Baseball. First pitch from Daikin Park in Houston is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN).

This starting pitching matchup between Dylan Cease and Framber Valdez is a fascinating one, as both are ace-caliber pitchers who have been tagged for seven-plus earned runs within their last two starts. I have more confidence in Valdez turning in a solid performance, as two of his four starts have been scoreless outings (of six-plus innings pitched) against playoff hopefuls in the Mariners and Mets.

Valdez has the third-lowest ERA (2.15) since July last year (min. 80 IP), and the second-lowest ERA since 2023 (min. 325 IP). Meanwhile, Cease’s strikeout rate is down three percentage points from last season. He also has allowed a .410 xwOBAcon, and faces an Astros lineup that entered the weekend with five regular starters with an xwOBA of .300 or better. 

San Diego’s MLB-best 15-6 record is largely built on its home successes (12-1 at Petco Park). Thus, its poor road play is why I predict Houston will beat San Diego by a final score of Astros 4, Padres 3.
