📰 Cavaliers vs. Pacers NBA preview & matchup analysis
It’s tricky to lean on stats to handicap this game because of Cleveland’s newfound lack of incentive to play. With Darius Garland, Donovan Mitchell, Max Strus, and Evan Mobley all listed as out, the Cavaliers will use a starting five we’ve never seen them use this season tonight. The lineup will likely be some amalgamation of Ty Jerome, De’Andre Hunter, Jarrett Allen, and pick your poison at wing.
The Pacers are in a weird spot because they’ve basically locked up the fourth seed but can technically go up or down. Their injury report doesn’t feature any starters, so we can expect the usual starting five from them. Since the All-Star break, the Pacers rank eighth in net rating (+6.5), eighth in offensive efficiency (118.4), and 10th in defensive efficiency (111.9). That kind of production should cook against the Cavs’ bench.
If any individual player deserves credit for Indiana’s second-half performance, it’s Tyrese Haliburton. He is averaging 20.5 points and 11.1 assists per contest since the break after averaging 17.8 and 8.5 before it. Haliburton’s poor first-half production has depressed his averages enough for Brooklyn’s Trendon Watford to roast him for being in the midst of a “down year,” but Haliburton’s bounce-back and overall efficiency make that argument less compelling.
Another key piece to consider is the schedule. Today is the third-to-last day of the regular season. Every team, including both sides of this matchup, are back in action tomorrow and on Sunday. Indiana will host the Orlando Magic tomorrow while Cleveland will visit the New York Knicks. Those scheduling concerns could lead to even more lineup weirdness from the Cavaliers as they look to not overwork the reserves.

🔥 Ty Jerome Under 24.5 points + assists ⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Cavs will turn to Jerome to lead the backcourt tonight. While that certainly suggests a major uptick in shot volume and passing, one wonders how much he’ll actually produce. Without Mitchell, Jerome averaged 17.9 points and 4.7 assists this year. Without Garland, he averaged 21.8 points and four assists.
Importantly, this Indiana defense hasn’t been friendly to point guards. Over the last 15 games, Indiana ranks 15th in points allowed (23.7) and third in assists allowed (7.2) to the position. Since the All-Star break, Indiana ranks sixth in total assists allowed (25) as well. With another game to play tomorrow, don’t be surprised if Ty Jerome is held well below this figure.

🔥 Jarrett Allen Under 16.5 points + rebounds ⭐⭐⭐⭐
When you see very few sportsbooks posting lines for a starting player, it raises some serious questions. Do the books anticipate something weird happening with his minutes? That’s what I think is happening with Jarrett Allen, as only a handful of sportsbooks have odds available for him.
Allen has been Cleveland’s iron man this season. He has played in and started all 79 of the team’s games this season, and this could be a means for the team to keep that streak alive. We all saw the Brooklyn Nets do something similar with Mikal Bridges last season, and some similar shenanigans could be in order tonight.
Buy the under and hope he plays for just a few minutes.

🔥 Pascal Siakam Under 19.5 points ⭐⭐⭐
This NBA player prop pick for tonight’s game stems largely from market-based reasoning. Some of the sharper sportsbooks have the total set to 18.5 with the under costing you -105, but you can buy the under 19.5 for -115 at Fanatics. That’s a great off-market number worth targeting tonight, especially with the Pacers having to play again tomorrow.
Siakam has been averaging 19.6 points per game since the All-Star break, which is solidly ahead of this line, but four of those games came without Haliburton. When we filter out those four games, his average drops to 19.2, with him staying under in 11 of those 19 appearances. Lock in the under and hope Indiana gets out to a big lead early.
