Even with Clayton facing the top-ranked defense in the country, I was fully expecting this number to land a few ticks higher. After all, the Florida star dropped 34 points in the Final Four against Auburn - another top-10 defense - and 30 points in the Elite Eight against Texas Tech, and he's scored at least 22 points in eight of his last 10 games.
Houston's swarming defense will surely try to force the ball out of Clayton's hands, which is easier said than done. The 6-3 guard took more than a third of Florida's shots in the Final Four and made a team-high seven free throws, too. He did much of his damage in the second half, snaking around defenders and hunting for his shot as he's done all tourney long.
The Cougars' defense is allowing the fewest points per 100 possessions (87.4), but it's struggled to prevent opposing teams from getting to the line. It's also allowed a high volume of 3-point attempts, and while Clayton shouldn't expect easy looks tonight, he's crafty enough to find his spots and also force his way to the charity stripe.
Florida is the favorite tonight entirely because of Clayton's brilliance in this NCAA Tournament, and I'd be shocked if the Gators win without a 20-point performance from their top scorer against this elite defense. And if they're losing? Expect Clayton to try to shoot his team back into it until the final buzzer sounds.
